The First Hint of Fall

Fall has always been one of my favorite times of year, second only to winter and Christmas. There is something about the first hint of a new season that makes me want to slow down, stay home a little more, and make everything feel warm and cozy. This year, it all feels even more special as we get to experience it for the first time with our daughter.

It may still feel like summer outside, but inside our home, I was more than ready for fall. I had been looking forward to pulling out the pumpkins, lighting our favorite candles, and adding those little touches of warmth around the house that make it feel like the season is finally beginning.

Welcoming the Season

My sister came to stay for the weekend, which gave me every excuse I needed to finally bring fall into the house. We pulled the boxes down from the attic and spent the afternoon rediscovering all the little things I had nearly forgotten about since last year. Then the three of us, my sister, my daughter tucked alongside us, and me, went out in search of a few new pieces to mix in.

By the time we were home, the afternoon had turned into exactly the kind I love. A bottle of wine was open, jazz played in the background, and little piles of pumpkins, leaves, and candles seemed to cover every surface while we decided where everything belonged. We moved from room to room, adding a little warmth here and changing something there, with my daughter along for all of it.

There was nothing particularly elaborate about the day, but maybe that is why I loved it so much. It was simply the three of us at home, making the house feel ready for a season I have been waiting for all year. And somewhere between the music, the wine, and decorating with my daughter for the first time, it felt like fall had quietly arrived.

Bringing Fall Into Our Home

I’ve always loved the way a home changes with the seasons. Not through anything dramatic, but through the small things that slowly begin to appear. A heavier throw over the sofa, candles burning a little earlier, and familiar fall pieces finding their way back onto shelves after spending most of the year tucked away.

We kept much of what was already in our home and simply layered the season into it. Autumn branches, old books, woven textures, warm brass, and little pumpkins tucked between family photographs brought just enough of those deeper fall colors into our otherwise neutral rooms. Nothing was perfectly coordinated, and I think that made it feel even more like home.

By the end of the afternoon, there were still wine glasses on the coffee table, a bin of blankets waiting to be put away, and my daughter’s things scattered among everything we had just styled. There was even a pacifier tucked into the tray beside the pretty things. This season of our home looks a little different now, and somehow that makes welcoming fall feel even more special.

A New Season of Motherhood

I think part of my excitement for fall this year comes from knowing that every season gets to become new again through my daughter. She is still so little, but I already find myself thinking about the traditions I want to create and the things I hope she remembers about growing up in our home.

I want fall to mean pumpkin patches and apple picking, warm cider in the kitchen, cozy recipes we make every year, and evenings at home when the house feels especially warm. Someday she’ll be old enough to choose her own pumpkin or help me bake something in the kitchen, but for now, I’m just excited to have her beside me for all of it.

More than anything, I want the seasons of her childhood to feel memorable. I want our home to be the place where traditions are kept, where little things are made special, and where she grows up looking forward to the same rituals coming around year after year. This is only our first fall with her, and I love knowing we’re just beginning to create those memories.

The Coziest Months Ahead

Fall always feels like the beginning of the best time of year. The days slowly get shorter, the holidays start to feel a little closer, and home becomes somewhere I want to be more than ever. This year, I have a feeling it will all feel even cozier with a baby in my arms.

We’re in a season of life that naturally keeps us home a little more, and I’m learning to really love that. Slow mornings, walks when the air finally cools, something warm cooking in the kitchen, and evenings spent together at home are exactly what I’m craving right now.

There is so much to look forward to in the months ahead, but I don’t want to rush through any of it. Our first fall as a family of three is here, and I’m ready to settle in, make our home as warm as I can, and enjoy this sweet season of life while we’re in it.
